Pride Through Protest reminds me that being queer, being sober, and being visible are all radical acts. We carry the legacy of our predecessors, and it’s up to us to continue the fight. The causes may have evolved, but the core of standing up for what’s right hasn’t.
I participate because I’ve learned how to be of service through recovery. I know I can’t keep what I have without giving it away. I show up so others know they can do this too.
Sobriety is the most fundamental part of my identity. It’s changed who I am to my core and made me a better person. Without it, I wouldn’t be participating in anything. Period.
Despite popular belief, I’m not as scary as my resting face suggests. I simply can't move my face. Talk to me ;)
Probably that one time someone did a full splits number in a harness and heels... oh wait, that was just a random Wednesday at The Eagle before Thanksgiving, not a pageant.
My parents and grandparents inspire me. Their strength, dedication, courage, and creativity keep me going. I've seen my mother grow into a fierce and successful leader, my grandmother create magic out of thin air, my father face unimaginable battles with quiet determination, and my grandfather give selflessly to others. I work every day to live up to the best parts of those who gave me life.
Thank you for your support. The fact that people are willing to stand behind me, and something I carry so much passion for, is an honor and a complete shock. Thank you.
